Vallis (plural valles), a word of Latin origin, is used to describe valleys of very different shapes.
Thus, vallis applies just as well to the gigantic canyon system of Valles Marineris as to shallow, ill-defined valleys like Simud Vallis in Xanthe Terra. On Mars, the wide valleys most often bear the name given to the red planet in different languages: Ares means Mars in Latin, Al-Qahira means Mars in Arabic, Indonesian and Malay, Auqakuh in Inca, Bahram in Persian, Hrad in Armenian, Hor Desher in Egyptian, Kasei in Japanese, Maja in Nepalese, Mangala in Sanskrit, Mawrth in Welsh, Ma'adim in Hebrew, Nirgal in Babylonian. More rarely, it can also be a translation of the word star: Dao Vallis refers to Dao, the Thai term for a star and Reull to a planet in Gaelic. Smaller Martian valleys are named after terrestrial rivers: Dubis Vallis refers to the river Doubs in France as well
as Loire Vallis.
